Exclusive Insights: How a Small Decentralized Team Responded to a +$50m Hack

    Introduction

Potentially, one of the most important snippets of information you learn in cryptocurrency is this:

There are two types of exchanges—those that have been hacked and those that will be hacked.

It is synonymous with “Not your keys, not your crypto”, but nobody tells you it often extends to everything to do with cryptocurrency.

Your best defense is teaming up with the strongest coders. Building powerful communities. And putting in a ton of effort and development time to constantly re-enforce your project.

But sometimes that’s not even enough. This is the true story of how the Haven protocol survived, and thrived from a +$50-million hack this summer. I’m going to share details of what it was like from the inside.

    The Haven Protocol

Our story begins with two smart developers recognizing a hole in the cryptocurrency market and deciding to fill it.

This hole being the inherent clash between price stability for crypto-assets and privacy for crypto-assets.

As you may have realized, you can have one or the other, but not both at the same time. For example, you can’t track Monero’s transactions along the blockchain, but by the same token, you can’t be sure that the $50 worth you buy today will be worth that much tomorrow. It may be more, or it may be less.

The opposite is true for Stablecoin like USDC—which you are certain (relatively speaking) that it will remain at the $1 price point day-after-day. The challenge here is that anyone from the government, to scammers, to your nosy neighbours, can review your transactions.

How then do you find a combination of both?

This is where the idea of private finance (PriFi) comes in – and is exactly what the Haven Protocol is all about.

Development on the project, just like any other, hasn’t been a straight line “up and to the right”. We’ve had our fair share of challenges. But growth in the project really started picking up over time, as the community got stronger, and our core development team started to really push forward.

Everything was coming up. Until it wasn’t. And despite the progress that had been made, nobody saw it coming.

    June 22, 2021

The attack on the Haven network begins.

It’s sophisticated, well-planned and aggressive. So much in fact, that our team doesn’t detect it until 5 a.m. the next day.

A hacker (or hackers) have modified the miner-reward validation code, taking advantage of a previously undetected vulnerability. They’ve gotten away with a much higher mining award than should have been given.

The problem was easy to spot because miner transactions are public. There were two places in the chain where our core team of developers replicated the exploit and were able to structure a patch.

Working non-stop, they had the patch out to the majority of the nodes on the network by 1:30 p.m. the same day the hack was discovered.

But the hackers weren’t done, and our core team was back in the ‘meeting room’ within a week. A couple of days later our team spotted two additional suspicious transactions in the explorer, wherein they found another vulnerability we had never discovered before. This one was more sinister and impactful than the first.

The hackers minted thousands of counterfeit xBTC coins and xAssets, which correlated with an unusually high selling volume of XHV on KuCoin.

Not only were tens of millions of dollars at stake, but this directly threatened the tokenomics of the protocol. If the team hadn’t seen it when they did, the hackers could have minted enough xAssets and cashed out to BTC or ETH to crater the value of XHV. By flooding the market with assets, the price could have approached zero, and the protocol would have been destroyed.

There would be no coming back from that.

    The Severity Of The Situation

It is sometimes difficult to comprehend the sacrifices of the people behind cryptocurrency projects. Decentralization, sudo-anonymous profiles, and interesting projects often lead us to believe that there is a “magical team” or “big company” with “millions of dollars” behind a project.

But this is not often the case.

The Haven team has grown from a grass-roots movement. Focused around the idea of private finance (PriFi), individuals have gathered from all walks of life to support and contribute to the project.

People have literally given up jobs, executive positions at companies, have put families on hold, and have sacrificed businesses and opportunity to push an idea forward. This idea, the future of private finance (PriFi) is, we believe, bigger than any one individual. Yes, while difficult, the sacrifices are worth it.

But when a hacker (or hackers) threaten to take it all down in the blink of an eye, the impact ripples through the community, and you realize that everything you’ve been fighting for could disappear in an instant. This is an extremely difficult position to be in.

It is made even more difficult when the hacker shows up in your community, taunting and harassing the community while spouting false claims that “the hack wasn’t financially motivated”, which was clearly not the case.

It is only a strong vision, strong community, and dedicated individuals who hold it all together in the face of adversity.

Looking it dead in the eye, no one on the team flinched. We all knew that the response had to be meticulously calculated and executed. So our team and community banded together, and got to work.

    The Response

First our team spread the word about the hack to our exchange partners. This included KuCoin, TradeOgre, and Bittrex. We requested they close all XHV wallets to keep the attacker from depositing and selling their ill-gotten XHV minted from the counterfeit assets.

Understanding that we might need to take more drastic measures, we shut down the pricing record mechanism of the protocol temporarily, which determines how much xUSD or xAssets are minted in each conversion.

As the hacker taunted the community and the fixes were being implemented, it became evident that one more hard decision needed to be made. For this we approached the community and presented a vote.

A massively difficult decision, the question was proposed to the community – do we roll back the blockchain or keep on progressing with the hacker in our midst, and an existential threat to the idea of private finance.

    Rollback

Typically, rolling back a blockchain is a contentious issue. It means invalidating any transactions you may have made. It means coins you’ve uncovered through mining go away. Gains that have been made from transactions, are completely invalidated and wiped out.

    It’s not a decision that’s made lightly.

In this case, it also meant the Haven Protocol could reverse transactions that happened during the attack, eliminating or at least mitigating the damage that was mounting.

The community was in favor of the rollback, and voted it in with overwhelming support.

While damage was done, this finalized a fix to a problem that had put us in an existential crisis and allowed us to move forward with lessons learned and a stronger base. Here’s what was done to strengthen the protocol even further.

    The Way Forward

The Haven Protocol has transitioned from unhacked to hacked and come out the other end with a far improved protocol based on everything that was learned over the course of the hack.

Our core team improved efficiencies in the Haven codebase by refactoring the code and by strengthening the protocol wherever weakness was found.

Our team wrote the new validation, tested it, and had it analyzed by Cypher Stack, a research firm with experts in cryptography and Monero. If you’re so inclined, you can read Cypher Stack’s analysis here.

The Haven 2.0 codebase has since been subject to penetration testing for several months by an external Monero expert.

We’ve made moves to leverage our community even more – launching our public testnet to make sure Haven 2.0 had been reviewed by as many developers as possible.

And finally we’ve properly incentivized a Bug Bounty Program, offering rewards of up to $100,000 for identification of serious issues.

We have learned from our mistakes, and have come out the other side stronger.

    What’s next?

The Haven Protocol is now moving to becoming integrated with the cross-chain decentralized exchange THORChain, taking Haven global.

The community intends to prove to the rest of the world what it already knows: that Haven is the future of PriFi, and Haven 2.0 will be a significant foundation for anyone who wants to maintain both privacy and stability in an uncertain world.

  • Gaming Tokens are Hitting New Price Records on a Daily Basis – What’s Driving the Rally?

Gaming Tokens are Hitting New Price Records on a Daily Basis – What’s Driving the Rally?

    Key takeaways:

    • On the heels of a recent Coinbase listing, GALA has become the best performing blockchain gaming token of 2021 in terms of price value
    • The crypto gaming sector has experienced exponential growth due to new monetization mechanics and metaverse hype
    • Certain gaming tokens are reaching market capitalizations larger than their more established non-blockchain counterparts

Blockchain gaming token GALA, a centerpiece of the broader Gala Games ecosystem, has hit a new all-time high as investors flocked to the token after the Coinbase listing on November 16. GALA joins the likes of Decentraland (MANA), The Sandbox (SAND), Enjin Coin (ENJ), and several more gaming-focused crypto projects that have been experiencing massive growth lately.

Gaming tokens are outperforming BTC and ETH and setting new price records despite the market pullback

As Bitcoin dipped below $60,000 on Thursday, most crypto assets, except certain outliers such as Crypto.com Coin (CRO) and Avalanche (AVAX), followed suit. However, digital currencies from the rapidly growing gaming sector appear to have weathered the pullback completely unaffected by the broader market trend.

As is always the case, several different factors play a role in the gaming sector’s low price correlation to other crypto assets in the market. One of the critical reasons for the current gaming token rally is undoubtedly the hype surrounding metaverse projects. Virtual reality building companies reached unprecedented heights after the social media giant Facebook announced its rebrand to ‘Meta’ late last month and proclaimed VR worlds are the future.

The second potential reason for the gaming token rally is the introduction of a new monetization model, the so-called Play-to-Earn (P2E), which allows players to collect digital tokens and expand their in-game inventories with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) based gaming items. By simply playing the game, players are able to earn income – a stark contrast to many of today’s most popular video games, which often require players to purchase items if they want to stay competitive (Play-to-Win (P2W) concept) but allow no (legal) way of converting their gaming items for cash.

Although we have introduced the P2E model and the long-term prospects of metaverse as the key drivers fueling the large gains in the sector, and for a good reason, the top blockchain gaming companies are currently boasting market valuations that can only be explained by massive market speculation.

The prices in the sector seem to be inflated, and many projects are reaching market capitalizations larger than established gaming companies with millions of users while having tiny communities and only alpha versions of their virtual gaming worlds currently available. For instance, Decentraland has a market cap of $6.75 billion while having less than 1,000 concurrent daily users. On the other hand, a non-blockchain metaverse, VRChat, regularly tops 1 million daily active users while having an estimated market value of $1 billion.

Which gaming tokens have performed the best so far?

For most of the year, Axie Infinity (AXS) was the best performing gaming token in terms of price gain. AXS was the second-biggest gainer in the market for a couple of months, only trailing behind the red hot Shiba Inu (SHIB).

In the last week, AXS was overtaken by GALA. The recent listing on Coinbase pushed the token to new heights. At the time of this writing, GALA is up more than 300x since the start of the year, ahead of AXS and SAND by a considerable margin.

GALA is currently the biggest YTD gainer in the gaming sector, ahead of AXS and SAND.

Although the crypto gaming industry is still in its infancy, the long-term potential is clear, and investors realize that. However, it is worth noting that the list of top gaming tokens will likely look very different a year from now.

We’ve compiled a list of nearly every gaming token on the market in our brand new gaming assets category, where you can follow the latest news updates and price movements of your favorite coins.

  • Top 3 Coins to Watch – Week 47

Top 3 Coins to Watch – Week 47

Throughout Week 46 bearish conditions prevailed on most cryptocurrency markets. This caused the total cryptocurrency market capitalization to drop by over $400 billion compared to the ATH market valuation of $3.03 trillion that was set on November 10. Nevertheless, there was one crypto sub-group that managed to defy the general downward trend. These were the coins and tokens associated with blockchain gaming sector, which is still gaining momentum following Fecebook’s rebrand into Meta. Several tokens, including the MANA (Decentraland) and SAND (The Sandbox), which we wrote about in our previous articles, surged towards their new ATHs. But which coins have the best potential to do the same in Week 47? Well, this might just be the best place to find out…

    3. Parsiq (PRQ)

Parsiq is a blockchain-based analytics platform that specializes in connecting blockchain activity to real-world applications and events. In other words, Parsiq offers a blockchain-based version of an if-this-then-that (IFTTT) service. The Parsiq team is also advocating for higher blockchain interoperability, which is why their services are available over a wide variety of blockchain networks including Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Binance Smart Chain (BSC), Polkadot (DOT) and Algorand (ALGO), to mention just a few. The team is also working on integrating with new blockchains, DeFi protocols and apps.

Parsiq’s IQ protocol expands to Solana, records rapid TVL growth

Decentralized data monitoring system Parsiq (PRQ) is experiencing rapid growth in users and traffic as well as a growing number of partnerships, third-party rankings, and an increasing total value locked (TVL). Last week, Parsiq revealed that its services are available on Solana too. While both users and investors were very happy about the integration, this is by far not the only major integration of the project’s IQ protocol. The team managed to score more than 50 partnerships in 2021, including those with major players such as Solana (SOL), Polkadot (DOT) and Chainlink (LINK). However, the team currently has more than 30 new projects in the pipeline to be integrated with IQ Protocol. The high availability of Parsiq’s services also boosts adoption. From June to November, the number of addresses staking PRQ in IQ Protocol grew from 95 to over 5,000 and the number of PRQ tokens staked has increased from just 3 million PRQ to over 50 million PRQ. Furthermore, BSC News recently proclaimed Parsiq as the top mid-market cap DeFi project on BSC.

    2. Crypto.com Coin (CRO)

Crypto.com is a Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange and crypto debit card issuer, which aims to increase the usage of cryptocurrency as a payment method for everyday purchases. Early crypto adopters might have heard of Monaco, which was the name the company used before the rebrand in July 2018. Monaco started out by conducting a token sale between May and June of 2017, which raised a total of $26.7 million. Staking the platform’s native CRO token offers discounted fees on the exchange, higher earnings on Crypto Earn, loans with lower annual interest as well as 100% rebates on streaming services (Spotify, Netflix, Amazon Prime) and cashbacks of up to 8% for the Crypto.com’s Visa card holders. Today, Crypto.com is a well-known player in the cryptocurrency industry and its CRO token is already the second biggest exchange token by market cap.

CRO set ATH after news about the Staples Center renaming deal went public

Crypto.com has been taking their marketing campaigns very seriously. The exchange’s marketing sector clearly figured out that sports are the best way to promote their services. Earlier this year Crypto.com has struck a sponsorship deal worth $100 million with Formula 1 and another deal worth $175 million over 10 years with UFC. The crypto company has recently upped its game with a $400 million deal with NBA franchise Philadelphia 76ers and a “Future favours the brave” campaign featuring Hollywood actor Matt Damon which likely costed more than $100 million as well. But the biggest deal was revealed to the public on November 17, when Crypto.com revealed they have struck a deal with AEG, one of the world’s biggest presenters of sports and entertainment programming, to rename the Staples centre, an iconic sports and entertainment venue, to Crypto.com Arena. To hold the naming rights for the next 20 years, Crypto.com had to cash out $700 million. While that sure sounds like a lot of money, this means that Crypto.com will be placed at the forefront of the global sports and live-entertainment industry for the next 20 years. The deal also brought the Los Angeles Lakers and the LA Kings teams among Crypto.com’s partners. The renaming deal seems to already be having the desired effect. The number of Crypto.com users is increasing and the price of CRO token surged by almost 50% on the day of the announcement, resulting in the token’s new ATH price of $ 0.594040. In addition, Crypto.com recently launched its own blockchains called Crypto.com Chain and Cronos chain, which will provide a native decentralized infrastructure for Crypto.com users and developers.

    1. Avalanche (AVAX)

Avalanche is a highly scalable open-source smart-contract enabled blockchain ecosystem. It relies on its own Proof-of-Stake consensus protocols called the Avalanche consensus protocol and the Snowman consensus protocol, which guarantee blockchain immutability while consuming minimal amount of energy at the same time. In addition, Avalanche ecosystem is also highly interoperable – for example Avalanche applications are compatible with Ethereum’s Solidity smart contract programming language and Ethereum-based tokens can be transferred to Avalanche blockchains via Avalanche Bridge. As such it is most often used for various DeFi applications and enterprise blockchain deployments. Every blockchain within Avalanche is part of a subnet, but validators can choose which subnets they want to participate in. Nevertheless, validators are required to be active on the Primary Network, which consists of three blockchains: the Platform chain or P-Chain, the Contract chain or C-Chain and the Exchange chain or X-Chain.

AVAX defies the general market trend and continues trading at ATH prices

Avalanche’s market-defying rally is partly fuelled by Ava Labs’ new partnership with Deloitte. The “Big Four” accountant firm announced that it plans to use Avalanche’s blockchain for a new project they are working on. In its blog post Avalanche further revealed that their blockchain solutions would help Deloitte in “minimizing fraud, waste, and abuse,” which is a critical feature of  disaster management solutions. In addition, USDT has recently launched on Avalanche, bringing the DeFi platform’s users access to the largest and most liquid stablecoin in the industry. Doing so Avalanche (AVAX) has become the ninth blockchain platform to support USDT, the world’s largest market cap stablecoin. In addition, the update to Pangolin, the most popular decentralized exchange (DEX) on Avalanche, also represents good news for the whole ecosystem. The updated smart contracts of Pangolin V2, which will further fine-tune the decentralized trading and yield farming process, are going to be activated on November 21 on the Avalanche mainnet. All these positive news and more have allowed Avalanche’s native token managed to defy the general market downtrend. During last week, when most cryptocurrencies lost 10% of their value or even more, AVAX grew by more than 30%. In fact, AVAX was the best performing crypto asset in the group of top 40 cryptocurrencies by market cap both considering last 7 days and last month. Nevertheless, we do believe that the token still has plenty of room to grow.

  • DeFi Hub Acala Wins the First-Ever Polkadot Auction Slot, Raises $1.3B Worth of DOT in Crowdloans

DeFi Hub Acala Wins the First-Ever Polkadot Auction Slot, Raises $1.3B Worth of DOT in Crowdloans

After years of anticipation, the first batch of parachains auctions was successfully completed on Thursday. The first-ever parachain auction slot winner with 32M DOT staked is Acala, popular decentralized finance (DeFi) hub for Polkadot. Acala came out ahead in a neck and neck race with multi-chain protocol Moonbean.

    Key takeaways:

    • Although Acala ultimately ended up raising $60 million worth of DOT less in the week-long crowdloan period than Moonbean, the candle auction mechanism awarded Acala the top spot. The system is designed to take into account the duration of time that a project was leading the auction, and Acala came out ahead as it was leading Moonbean roughly 63% of the seven-day period.
    • Parachains are customized blockchains designed to feed into the mainchain. Since they are tailored for project-specific use cases, parachains can achieve higher throughput while retaining lower transaction costs than the main blockchain. Parachains were first introduced in Polkadot’s white paper and later incorporated into its canary network Kusama.
    • The parachain auction schedule was first announced in mid-October. At the time, the excitement surrounding the long-awaited Polkadot feature pushed the price of DOT to a new all-time high above $50.
    • Winners of parachain auction slots will be able to build on the Polkadot network for the duration of 96 weeks. Blockchain projects with the most active community have the highest chance to win parachains slots, due to the crowdloan fundraising method.
    • The price of DOT got caught into a broader bearish market trend, which pushed prices of most digital assets to late-October levels. DOT is currently exchanging hands at $41 per token, good for a total market valuation of $36.8 billion.
  • Bought in 2011 for $4,900, the 1,000 BTC ‘Gold Cas’ is Now Worth More Than $57 Million

Bought in 2011 for $4,900, the 1,000 BTC ‘Gold Cas’ is Now Worth More Than $57 Million

    Key takeaways:

    • The anonymous owner of a golden BTC coin with a denomination of 1,000 units purchased the exceedingly rare item in 2011 for $4,905
    • Despite the ‘Gold Cas’ now being worth more than $57 million, the owner is not tempted to sale
    • The physical 1,000 BTC coin is the world’s most expensive numismatic item

After buying a one-ounce Bitcoin physical coin with a denomination of 1,000 Bitcoin (BTC) in 2011 for $4,905, the anonymous investor couldn’t possibly have predicted that he would be in possession of the most valuable numismatic item just ten years later.

The exceedingly rare 1000 BTC physical coin is worth over 11,000 times its original price at current market rates

“Wait, I thought Bitcoin is an entirely digital creation. How come it was sold as a physical item?” you might have wondered after reading this article’s title. Here’s a quick recap.

The story behind the gold-cased BTC coin dates back to cryptocurrency early days when the company created by Mike Caldwell decided to engineer so-called ‘Casascius coins’, designed to be physical representations of various BTC denominations, ranging from 0.1 BTC to 1,000 BTC. Only six 1,000 BTC coins, referred to by the crypto community as “Gold Cas”, were ever produced.

Ten years later, only four out of the six purchased gold coins have been redeemed. Each coin has a unique BTC address and private key engraved under the coin’s hologram, allowing owners to redeem BTC if they so choose.

The anonymous owner who purchased one of the exceedingly rare coins in 2011 said in a statement, “It was definitely a stretch to make the purchase in 2011, as I didn’t really know what Bitcoin was or how I was going to redeem it one day.”

The ‘Gold Cas’ owner added that he had originally been planning to buy gold, but given the precious metal’s record prices at the time, he decided to invest in Bitcoin, which he was rather unfamiliar with at the time.

The anonymous owner left the coin in a desk drawer, forgetting about it until Bitcoin hit $1,000 years later

Having purchased the coin for less than $5,000, the owner paid no attention to the ‘Gold Cas’ until he came across a headline in 2013, which proclaimed that Bitcoin surpassed the psychological $1,000 barrier for the time ever.

The sudden price surge, which pulled the value of the BTC coin past $1 million, motivated the owner to learn more about the ins and outs of blockchain technology and he has kept a close eye on the sector ever since.

“Since the value of the coin increased to $1 million, there were other milestones I remember, such as when it hit the $10 million mark and then again at $25 million,” the coin’s owner recalls.

The ‘Golden Cas’ value has reached its highest point on November 10, when the price of the world’s largest crypto hit $68,770 and pulled the combined value of all digital assets in circulation above the $3 trillion mark for the first time in history. Bitcoin has since retraced below $60,000 and is currently exchanging hands at roughly $56,800.

Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections in Irvine, California, describes the cultural significance of the ‘Gold Cas’:

“It’s the ultimate 21st century collectible, merging gold with cryptocurrency; a cultural phenomenon considering the vast numbers of people under 30 who own some cryptocurrency as investments.”

The anonymous owner is reportedly not tempted to part ways with his prized possession just yet, despite the massive more than 11,000x ROI he is poised to realize – he believes Bitcoin has ample room to grow in the future and remains optimistic about the digital currency’s long-term prospects.

As a side note, despite ‘Gold Cas’ being the most valuable coin in existence, its value would end up being minuscule compared to the notorious trillion-dollar coin, which was proposed as a means of raising the US’ borrowing limit following the Great Recession. While the concept was ultimately rejected in 2013 by the Fed, the idea has resurfaced in late 2021, due to the economic effects of the Covid-19 stimulus packages.

  • Upcoming Joint Statement on Crypto by the US Financial Regulators is Shaping up to be “Far from Industry Friendly”

Upcoming Joint Statement on Crypto by the US Financial Regulators is Shaping up to be “Far from Industry Friendly”

The US financial industry watchdogs are preparing a joint statement with new regulatory guidelines applicable to the cryptocurrency industry. As reported by Bloomberg, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) is close to issuing a review of the blockchain sector, and the conclusions are likely to be unfriendly to crypto.

    Key takeaways:

    • The OCC is currently under the helm of Michael Hsu, who took office in May of this year. Hsu has been critical of the crypto sector in the past, comparing blockchain financial instruments and the crypto community to the toxic financial culture that brought about the 2008 financial crisis.
    • The new crypto guidelines will be based upon the recently concluded “crypto sprint” review, which was conducted by several government agencies, including the OCC, Federal Reserve, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
    • “The forthcoming releases will clarify that safety and soundness is paramount. We will proceed carefully and cautiously and will hold banks to the same,” Hsu explained at a Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia hosted technology summit earlier this week.
    • Hsu also said that the agencies working on the report are “approaching crypto activities very carefully with a high degree of caution.”
    • Earlier this week, the largest cryptocurrency exchange Binance, issued a list of 10 fundamental rights for crypto users, calling on industry leaders and policymakers to work together on the regulatory framework that would satisfy both parties and be beneficial to the average crypto user.
    • The Biden administration has not been particularly favorable towards crypto. The controversial bipartisan infrastructure bill included ambiguous language designed to tax digital assets, the SEC has repeatedly rejected Bitcoin spot ETF proposals, while the President’s Working Group has been pushing for more stringent stablecoin regulation.

Crypto-Powered Privacy Solution Nym Raises $13 Million, Led By Andreessen Horowitz

    Neuchâtel, Switzerland, 18th November, 2021,

European privacy startup Nym Technologies has successfully closed its third investment round. Led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z Crypto), this $13 million financing round included participation from leading venture capital firms Digital Currency Group, Tayssir Capital, Huobi Ventures, Hashkey, and Fenbushi. Following a Polychain-led round and hiring Chelsea Manning as a security auditor, this round signals the interest of mainstream venture capital in the growing demand for privacy solutions.

Nym’s revolutionary “mixnet” is the only technology that can defeat nation-state level mass surveillance where the adversary can observe every internet packet in a network at scale, unlike VPNs or even Tor. Nym accomplishes this seemingly impossible feat by mixing packets in a series of decentralized nodes and adding dummy traffic as needed.

Per Harry Halpin, CEO of Nym, “We at Nym are very lucky, as it’s historically unprecedented to see support from the best venture capitalists to stop mass surveillance. To make privacy real on the scale of the entire internet, building a real-world working mixnet has long been the missing piece of a puzzle that predates even the origin of Bitcoin.”

“Nym’s network-level technology is essential for any blockchain that strives to offer privacy for its users, and its clever incentive structures set it apart from other solutions,” said Ali Yahya, General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz. “Nym’s team may be the most advanced group of mixnet researchers and engineers ever assembled. As demand for online privacy continues to grow, their role in the space will become ever-more important.”

Samantha Bohbot, Head of Platform at Digital Currency Group shared this outlook, “NYM has built a first-of-its-kind privacy layer, capable of protecting against even the fiercest adversaries, and powered by a crypto economic incentive structure. We envision its technology setting a new standard in user privacy across the internet. We are impressed by the team’s knowledge, passion, and dedication to developing a more secure web, and are excited to back them.”

Sadry Bouhejba, founder of Tayssir Capital, says “Nym network restores user privacy on the internet, without compromising on efficiency nor scalability. We believe Nym is an essential layer towards a more inclusive and fair society.”

With a fresh capital injection just before the platform’s decentralized mixnet mainnet launch, Nym Technologies plans to use the funds to expand its community and add a dedicated product team. Finally, Nym will roll out NYM tokenomics and begin stress-testing the infrastructure before scheduling the mainnet launch.

    About Nym

Built by leading researchers and experienced developers, Nym is an open-source and decentralized infrastructure that offers full-stack privacy. The platform is permissionless and incentivized, empowering developers to build applications that guarantee security against metadata surveillance at the mixnet and credentials levels.

  • Binance Publishes ‘10 Fundamental Rights for Crypto Users’, Calls for a More Regulated Crypto Market

Binance Publishes ‘10 Fundamental Rights for Crypto Users’, Calls for a More Regulated Crypto Market

Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange, recently issued a list of 10 fundamental rights for crypto users, a cryptocurrency bill of rights of sorts, calling on industry leaders and policymakers to work together to produce a regulatory framework for the future of crypto.

    Key takeaways:

    • The header on the recently launched yourcryptorights.com website reads, “Crypto is evil. When it comes to crypto, don’t let the headlines fool you.” It certainly grabs attention, especially as a full-page printed ad.
    • Binance is convinced that everyday users can only benefit from the rapidly evolving blockchain industry if necessary regulatory safeguards are put in place and believes financial opportunity should be “accessible to everyone” and that crypto allows “for greater economic independence.”
    • The contents of the second and third bullet points, discussing cryptocurrency businesses’ responsibility to work with regulators, are particularly intriguing, especially given Binance’s history with the regulators.
    • “Responsible crypto platforms have an obligation to protect users from bad actors and implement Know Your Customer (KYC) processes to prevent financial crimes,” the third bullet point reads. It is worth noting that Binance has only recently employed a platform-wide KYC policy.
    • Binance’s pivot towards proactive compliance has been well documented. Over the past year, the exchange has taken numerous measures to appease regulators, such as the lowering of maximum leverage when futures trading and educating users about responsible trading techniques.
    • Throughout the ten points that Binance considers to be of most importance to the general health of the crypto industry, the exchange repeatedly calls on its competitors to work with regulators and abide by the current legislation.
    • Binance wrapped the list by stating, “Crypto regulation is inevitable,” and expanded the position in the site’s footnote by adding, “If you’re looking for a caveat, you won’t find it here. Crypto regulation is coming. And we believe it will change the industry for the better.”
    • Wall Street Journal recently reported that Binance could be worth north of $300 billion, which would rank it as the 30th largest company in the world, ahead of entertainment giant Walt Disney and medical conglomerate Pfizer.
